Therapy for diverse humans

Counselling in Canberra
Are you looking for counselling in Canberra? Are you struggling with overwhelm, a harsh inner critic, or excessive rumination? Do you feel adrift, misunderstood or unfulfilled? Is self-doubt or perfectionism bringing you down?
These are things many people wrestle with, and especially those who are (or suspect they are) neurodivergent. Rebecca Tregurtha Counsellor can help you find more self-compassion and deeper self-understanding so that you can live a more balanced, contented and rewarding life.
I offer face-to-face counselling in Canberra (at North Canberra Counselling in Turner), or online Australia-wide, for individuals aged 16 and over. With new extended hours, I have immediate availability.
Neurodivergence-Affirming
My neurodivergent* clients often say that for years they wondered what was wrong with them as they watched other people glide through life with ease.
Nothing was wrong!
They were just making their way through systems and institutions that were not built for them, without knowing it. Some only realised their own neurodivergence when they saw themselves in their child’s assessment checklists!
Then it all made sense.
But years of struggling to operate successfully in a neurotypical world has taken a toll on their mental health. Maybe you feel the same.
I get it and together we will discover your inner resources for living with greater ease.
And, as a mum of neurodivergent children myself, I understand the self-doubt, the overwhelm, the confusion – and the fierce mama bear – that parenting these unique and amazing young humans brings up.
My belief is that neurodivergences such as ADHD and Autism are simply natural variations of the human brain. Neurodiversity is normal, just as the variety in our physical appearance is normal. However, so many of us have struggled in a world that does not value our uniqueness and that often results in poorer mental health.
Helping you feel better is my passion.
* I use the terms neurodivergent and neurodivergence rather than neurodiversity and neurodiverse in this context because I believe every human is neurodiverse. One day I hope that we won’t need the term neurodivergent/neurodivergence – or even neurodiversity – because we will accept that all brains are simply brains and our unique differences will be valued, appreciated and understood.

Who am I?
I am a Masters-qualified counsellor and a member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).
I believe in the unique value of every person and that embracing diversity in all its forms makes our world a richer and stronger place. I know, though, that our world is tough on anyone who doesn’t fit the mould, from being Autistic, to living in a larger body, to coming out as gender-queer – and the mental health consequences can be huge.
My person-centred approach to counselling is compassionate and caring, helping you to thrive and be more authentically you. I want to meet the person beyond the label.
