Online Therapy Australia-wide
Mental Health Telehealth
I offer online therapy Australia-wide allowing you to access counselling support from a qualified and registered counsellor without leaving home.
Online therapy (also called mental health telehealth, tele-mental-health, or online counselling) is now much more widely available thanks to our pandemic-driven adjustment to telehealth.
This is a great option if:
- You do not live in Canberra but want to access therapy with me.
- You live in a regional or remote area without access to a local service.
- You have mobility issues and cannot access my first floor office.
- You have physical or sensory issues and feel more comfortable in your own space.
- You usually come to the office but you are unwell or have time constraints that preclude an in-person session on this occasion.
- You prefer telehealth for the convenience or privacy it affords.
How does it work?
You schedule your appointment with me as normal but I will send you a video conferencing link before your appointment. At the time of your appointment, click the link and enter my virtual waiting room. I will meet you there for your session. Sessions are usually 60 minutes in duration just like my in-person sessions.
Your Questions Answered
Does it work?
Online therapy sessions are much the same as in-person and research suggest that it is just as effective as in-person care (Bulkes, et al., 2022). If helpful, I can share my screen to view and discuss resources together, or I might have you access online versions of physical resources I would use in an in-person session. I may also ask you to have items such as pencils and paper ready for exercises or notetaking.
What do I need?
Therapy online requires you to have access to a device with camera and microphone and a stable, high-speed internet connection that is capable of uninterrupted video calls. If, for some reason, there are technology issues on at the time of your session, we can proceed via phone call.
Is it secure?
I usually use the Psychology Today ‘Sessions’ platform for my online therapy sessions. This is a HIPAA complaint teletherapy platform, so it is private and secure. It allows for three people to be present in the session (you, me and a support person or partner if you choose).
Is it safe?
It is important to ensure that you have a quiet, private space for your session where you are confident you will not be overheard or interrupted. I also ask all clients to provide the name and contact details of a trusted friend or family member who is close by in case of emergency.
